ICS Fashion

The ICS Diploma in Fashion course will equip you with creative skills and knowledge which you can use both personally and professionally as a fashion designer. Through our Fashion course you will explore colour theory in detail, and learn how to sketch and use watercolours to visualise your fashion ideas. You'll review and source the equipment you will need to hone your stitching and dressmaking skills. Entry Requirements

You don't need any previous experience or qualifications to enrol on the ICS Fashion Diploma, just a love of fashion and design. ICS believe in making home learning and a rewarding future accessible to all.

Where will I go from here?

With the skills you learn from this Fashion course, you can take your first steps into employment, work placement or further study. Although not an accredited course, the practical design skills you will learn will enable you to develop your confidence in terms of presenting yourself to potential employers or applying to study for further qualifications.

What will I gain?

On completion you will receive an ICS Diploma in Fashion, reflecting the fact that you have successfully studied a course which has been developed by experts, to industry standards. You can use this diploma to present to potential employers, display on your CV and use as a basis for further study. 

Assessment

Assessments are a great way of checking your progress, while projects allow you to apply your learning to real-world situations. Throughout the Fashion course, you'll complete a range of assessments, including multiple choice papers, practical tutor-marked assessments and three projects. You will also be required to produce a work folder demonstrating your progression throughout the course.

  • Assessment 1:  multiple-choice questions
  • Assessment 2:  practical assessment
  • Assessment 3:  practical assessment
  • Assessment 4:  practical assessment
  • Assessment 5:  final project: garment production.

Project

In addition to the assessments in this course, a project has to be undertaken and a folder of work compiled. You must complete two of the following three options:

  • Option 1: A shirt or blouse (must have sleeves any length)
    Option 2: A skirt or trousers (must have zip fastening)
    Option 3: A waistcoat or a simple jacket (must have at least one working buttonhole)

Your work from your practical assignments may be included in your work folder for tutor marking.
Generally, assessments can be sent to us online via the ICS Student Community: it's the fastest way to receive your results. Projects and work folders, however, will need to be submitted by mail.

As a Fashion student, you'll receive a design kit, which includes a colour wheel, sketch pad, pencils and pastels, all contained in a smart portfolio case. You'll also receive the supporting text book -Vogue Fashion.

Design for Craft

  • Consider the importance of colour in fashion and examine how people respond to different colours. Learn how to combine colours successfully. Gain some practical experience of experimenting with fabrics and colour to create designs.

Introduction to Sewing

  • Learn how to sew several types of temporary and permanent stitches, and how to produce a variety of basic seams. Discover how to correctly take body measurements.

Dressmaking Processes

  • Learn how to prepare fabric, transfer pattern marking onto fabric, tack a garment, shape a garment, prepare facings, turn hems, create buttonholes and add buttons.

Decorative Features

  • Learn how to add zips, collars and cuffs. Discover how to use hooks and eyes, hooks and bars, snaps, trouser clips and Velcro as fasteners.

Fibres and Fabrics

  • Explore the qualities of different fibres and fabrics, and learn how to choose the right fabric for the garment that you are making. Discover how to correctly handle fabrics which need special attention, and how to remove stains, wash and iron garments correctly.

Miscellaneous Garments

  • Consider maternity wear, underwear and nightwear. Explore outfits for babies and children. Learn how to attach lace to garments, and how to create pockets and different styles of pleats.

Embroidery and Decoration

  • Learn how to transfer embroidery designs from paper to fabric. Explore scalloped edges, ruffles, fringes, tassels, rouleau, piping, bows and ribbons. Learn how to apply beads and sequins, and how to make belts and belt loops.

Pattern Alteration and Fitting

  • Discover how to make bodice, sleeve and skirt alterations, and how to adjust the shoulder and neckline. Learn how to raise or lower a waistline, and how to adjust poorly fitted skirts.
