ICS Dressmaking

Dressmaking is an incredibly useful skill, and our ICS Dressmaking course is the ideal first step, equipping you to make your own clothes or to make clothes for others. As you learn dressmaking skills you'll build up a portfolio of work and be able to fulfil your personal goals or progress to further study.

Our ICS Dressmaking course will enable you to develop basic skills in the craft of dressmaking. You will gain underpinning knowledge of the dressmaking process, providing you with the basis for progression into further related study.

You will develop a portfolio of work and learn to use materials, tools and equipment correctly and safely. As you progress through your dressmaking course, you will learn to use dress patterns and about different fabrics, as well as different stitches and techniques.

The dressmaking course also explores elements of fashion, and you'll study preparing and fitting garments and adding final touches.

Study the basic techniques used by professional dressmakers to produce a vast range of pieces and build up two portfolios of practical work to be marked by your tutor, which you can also use to demonstrate your skills and learning if you choose to progress onto employment, work placement or further education. Or simply learn a new hobby, allowing you to design and create for yourself, family and friends.


Entry Requirements

You don't need any previous experience or qualifications to enrol on theICS Dressmaking Diploma. That's because we believe in making home study - and a rewarding future - as accessible as possible. An interest in and passion for dressmaking, fashion and design is recommended to help motivate you thought the course. 

Where will I go from here?

You may simply want to learn new skills to use in your own time, for the benefit of yourself, family and friends. Or you may wish to forge a career in dressmaking, or progress to further study, in which case your portfolio work will act as evidence that you have studied this topic in depth. However you choose to use your new knowledge and skills, we hope that you get what you want out of the course, both personally and professionally. 

What will I gain?

On completion you will receive an ICS Dressmaking Diploma, reflecting the fact that you have successfully studied a course which has been developed by experts, to industry standards.

ICS Diplomas are written to QCF specifications wherever possible, and are largely equivalent to Level 1 Awards of study. ICS Diplomas are not awarding body accredited, therefore you will need to check with potential employers or educators as to whether they will recognise this course as prior learning. You can use this diploma to present to potential employers as evidence of your learned knowledge and skills, display on your CV and use as a basis for further study.

Assessment

Assessments are a great way of checking your progress. Throughout your course, you'll complete three written assessments which you will send to your tutor for marking and feedback.

By completing all assessments you will demonstrate that you are developing technical and creative writing skills, while learning more about the publishing industry and setting up on your own.

As part of this course you will be required to create two practical portfolios of work, comprising research and practical activities, and final pieces of work. In addition, you will undertake a final written assessment testing your understanding of the concepts you have learned throughout the course. These will be sent to ICS for marking at specified points during the course, and your final grade will be awarded accordingly.

Unit 1 Explore Dressmaking Ideas

  • In this unit you will explore the different tools and equipment necessary for dressmaking, considering proper use and health and safety issues. You will then go on to use your chosen tools and materials to learn several basic dressmaking techniques and concepts, including stitches and seams, understanding fashion, preparing and fitting garments and adding final touches.

 Unit 2: Explore Materials and Tools to Support Dressmaking Ideas

  • This unit allows you to build on your learning from Unit 1, exploring further dressmaking techniques and considering different fabrics available and how they should be cared for. At the end of this you will be required to submit Portfolio 1 to ICS for tutor-marking.

Unit 3: Produce Dressmaking Work

  • During this unit you will select and make your final garments for assessments purposes, using the knowledge you have gained in previous units. This unit focuses on making and presenting final work for tutor marking. At the end of this Unit you are required to submit Portfolio 2 including final assessment garments to ICS for tutor-marking and further undertake a written Test Paper on completion of Portfolio 2.
