Climate control is a vital part of today's construction industry and demand is growing for people qualified to install and maintain refrigeration, heating and air conditioning systems. Our BTEC Refrigeration, Heating and Air Conditioning course leads to a nationally-recognised Level 3 award which can gain you entry to jobs as a heating and refrigeration engineer.

The BTEC Refrigeration, Heating and Air Conditioning course will prepare you for employment as a trainee heating or air conditioning technician.

You'll gain all the skills you need to enter the trade, starting with health and safety and risk reduction in the workplace.

You will study the mechanics of heating systems and learn to gauge the requirements of clients, planning a system to suit. You will follow that up by gaining the skills required to install and maintain these systems.

You will study refrigeration and air conditioning systems in a similar way, finishing up with a detailed knowledge of all three types of system and the skills to service them.

You will also study the codes of practice and relevant legislation.

Once your BTEC Refrigeration, Heating and Air Conditioning course is complete you will have the knowledge to start refrigeration, heating and air conditioning services work as a trainee.


Entry Requirements

To enrol in the BTEC Refrigeration, Heating and Air Conditioning course, you must be over 16 and educated to at least GCSE standard D-G or hold an NVQ at level 1, or a GNVQ Foundation Certificate. Additionally, you must have some experience of the construction industry. Internet access is required.

Where will I go from here?

Once you've completed the BTEC Refrigeration, Heating and Air Conditioning course, you'll hold an industry-recognised qualification that can take you into a trainee heating technician role. Alternatively, you can progress to further study and enter the industry at a higher level.

Assessment

Assessments are a great way of checking your progress. During your BTEC Refrigeration, Heating and Air Conditioning course, you'll complete four multiple-choice formative assessments and four scenario-based assignments.

  • Examine the employer's and employee's responsibilities for health, safety and welfare in the workplace. Learn how to reduce risks in the workplace.

Heating

  • Explore clients' differing requirements, and learn how to identify locations with special heating requirements. Examine local and central systems. Study comfort indices, internal and external design temperatures, infiltration rates and the effects of building exposure. Consider the relevant regulations, codes of practice and standards.

Ventilation and Air Conditioning

  • Learn how to design air conveyance systems and single-zone air conditioning systems. Explore commissioning, operational and maintenance requirements.

Refrigeration Technology

  • Explore the design principles for the selection and balancing of equipment. Learn how to install refrigeration and air conditioning plants. Examine the codes of practice and relevant legislation.
