BA (Hons) Social Care with Counselling

Our BA (Hons) Social Care with Counselling Studies is a two-pronged social care degree course which will allow you to correctly assess care needs in a social context and make provision for appropriate care, and which will equip you with the specialist counselling skills to help others make positive choices to improve their health and well-being. It's a qualification relevant to a variety of social care jobs where the emphasis is on helping people towards better lives.

Through the BA (Hons) Social Care with Counselling Studies course you will gain a thorough understanding and detailed knowledge of social care. You'll develop an awareness of the major historical developments in social care and discover the key theoretical perspectives that affect the individual.

You will also learn about the range of ethical considerations in counselling and understand the various concepts of social care including the range of settings in which it operates. You will become aware of different theoretical approaches to work in social care as well as the implications of delivering care in practice.

Overall, you will gain a comprehensive and balanced understanding of the different needs of all the various users of social care and counselling, preparing you for a range of social care careers.

Where will I go from here?

This qualification gives you a sound foundation for a wide range of careers. Some of these areas include working with families, youth work, community care roles and working in housing - in which your counselling skills will be especially useful. As well as opportunities within the public sector, such as the NHS and local authorities, you'll be equipped with essential skills and knowledge to work in the private or charity sectors too. If you wish to pursue a professional qualification in counselling, then the Social Care with Counselling Studies course will provide an excellent introduction to further study.

What will I gain?

When successfully completing a module you'll gain 20 credits. In order to gain an Honours Degree you will need to obtain a total of 360 credits - 120 credits at each level. However, if you prefer to graduate early, you can choose from the following intermediate awards.

  • Ordinary Degree - 300 credits (15 modules) 
  • Diploma of Higher Education - 240 credits (12 modules) 
  • Certificate of Higher Education - 120 credits (6 modules) 
  • University Undergraduate Certificate - 40 credits (2 modules) 
  • University Undergraduate Associate Certificate - 20 credits (1 module)

Remember that, whichever option you choose, you'll receive only one final award.

Assessment

There are a number of assessments that you complete as part of your studies and forward to your academic tutor for grading and comments.

You'll also take a summative assessment at the end of your module. Summative assessments include coursework, exams or a mix of both. Summative assessments take place three times a year and exam venues are located around the UK. Please note that there are additional summative assessment fees for each module.

Skills for Learning: Social Care

This module will show you the way to become a more effective learner. You'll cover a range of different skill areas, including information technology, academic reading and writing, finding and using sources, and study skills. What's more, you'll have the opportunity to develop a Personal Development Plan (PDP) that will help you reflect on your existing skills and identify gaps where you need to apply greater focus.

Who Cares? The Social Care Mosaic (option)

This module explores in depth the issue of whose responsibility it is to care for individuals, families and vulnerable groups in society, and aims to give you an understanding of how different agencies and disciplines work collaboratively. You'll cover a broad range of subjects, from the links between social care and the community, to working effectively with carers, policy makers, professionals and a mixture of public, private, and welfare agencies.
