BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies

Our BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies degree course is an excellent stepping stone to a range of postgraduate programmes and rewarding jobs working with children, including Early Years Officers and Sure Start project workers. Covering the ages from birth to eight years, you'll look at early childhood development and early childhood education, exploring the systems and ideas that affect the experience and construction of childhood.

Through the BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies degree course, you'll gain a comprehensive and interdisciplinary preparation for working with children and an understanding of early childhood development. You will appreciate the development, needs and experience of young children and learn to analyse practical and theoretical situations in the context of early child development and childhood. You will learn to relate appropriate theory to early childhood practice and gain an understanding of research methodology. You will also undertake a small-scale research project in childhood studies to apply your new knowledge.

If English is not your first language, you will be required to have an IELTS score of 6.5 or above.

Where will I go from here?

With your specific skills you'll gain on successful completion of the Early Childhood Studies course, you could find yourself working within local authorities, housing associations and day nurseries, among many other areas.

As well as preparing you to work as anything from a nursery worker to a childcare project manager, this degree is an excellent springboard into professional qualifications such as children's nursing or social work.

What will I gain?

When successfully completing a module you'll gain 20 credits. In order to gain an Honours Degree you will need to obtain a total of 360 credits - 120 credits at each level. However, if you prefer to graduate early, you can choose from the following intermediate awards.

  • Ordinary Degree - 300 credits (15 modules)
  • Diploma of Higher Education - 240 credits (12 modules) 
  • Certificate of Higher Education - 120 credits (6 modules) 
  • University Undergraduate Certificate - 40 credits (2 modules) 
  • University Undergraduate Associate Certificate - 20 credits (1 module)

Remember that, whichever option you choose, you'll receive only one final award.

Assessment

There are a number of assessments that you complete as part of your studies and forward to your academic tutor for grading and comments.

You'll also take a summative assessment at the end of your module. Summative assessments include coursework, exams or a mix of both. Summative assessments take place three times a year and exam venues are located around the UK. Please note that there are additional summative assessment fees for each module.

Now you've enrolled on your degree course, this module will help you learn how to study at degree level. By understanding how to critically engage with written texts and learning academic style, punctuation and grammar, you'll develop and refine your knowledge - and you'll also discover how to use the Learning Resource Centre. After taking this module, you'll have all the skills and confidence you need for successful academic study.

Sociology of Childhood

In this module, you'll get to know the key sociological approaches to understanding childhood and young children. As well as examining different models of childhood, you'll look at the implications of those models - and you'll also gain a deeper appreciation of the ways society intervenes in children's lives. Taking into account the perspectives of children and adults, you'll look at childhood both nationally and internationally.
