A Level Statistics

A Level Statistics

The A Level Statistics course is ideal if you wish to study a numerate post-16 subject but don't want to study pure mathematics. The emphasis of the A Level Statistics course is on using and applying statistics and the content includes statistical knowledge, skills and techniques needed for other subjects such as Biology, Economics, Geography, Psychology and Business Studies.

Our A Level Statistics course will allow you to develop an understanding of statistics and statistical processes and to construct a logical statistical argument and recognise incorrect statistical reasoning. It will extend your range of knowledge, skills and techniques and your understanding of coherence and progression in statistics.

You will learn how a situation may be represented statistically and understand the relationship between 'real world' problems and statistical models, and how the statistical models can be refined and improved.

You will also learn how statistical techniques can give insight into given contexts and how to use statistics as an effective means of communication, developing an awareness of the relevance of statistics to other fields of study, to the world of work, and to society in general.

Entry Requirements

There is a progression of material through all levels of statistics, with each level depending on the knowledge, understanding and skills of earlier ones. The A Level Statistics course builds on the knowledge, understanding and skills established in GCSE Mathematics (or equivalent). GCSE Statistics is not a prerequisite.

Where will I go from here?

A Level Statistics supports progression to further qualifications through higher education, training and employment in a number of fields where knowledge of statistics is required. These include Biology, Economics, Geography, Psychology, Business Studies and many other disciplines.

What will I gain?

This course will prepare you to sit the AQA A Level Statistics exam

Assessment

ICS Assessment

  • There are test papers within your study materials which you should complete, however these do not count towards your final exam grade.

External Assessment

Examinations are held every June.

You will complete 6 written exams for your A Level Statistics.

  • Unit 1 - SS1B
  • Unit 2 - SS02
  • Unit 3 - SS03
  • Unit 4 - SS04
  • Unit 5 - SS05
  • Unit 6 - SS06

Each of the 6 papers are one hour and 30 minutes in duration, with all questions being compulsory.

Each paper is worth 75 marks.

For the written papers, you will require a copy of the AQA Booklet of formulae and statistical tables issued for this specification
