Course Overview

You’ll discover how to draw to scale and plan a room – as well as learning about lighting, and the importance of the finishing touch In addition, you’ll gain vital career skills, such as how to present your ideas professionally and make sure your designs are accurately costed.

Studying Interior Design by distance learning?

This course develops the underpinning knowledge and practical skills required by the subject. You’ll complete written assessments to test your knowledge at the end of each unit and submit three practical projects with a supporting work folder. These activities include:

• Practical exercises: paper based or using a range of materials, designed to assess your skills in producing the components of basic design work
• A workbook that will demonstrate your knowledge in support of your practical exercises which should include samples, sketches, notes and ideas.

The good news is you don't need any previous experience to take this course.

Examine the main types of flooring and consider the advantages and disadvantages of different types of floor coverings. Study the various types of wall coverings, paints and fabrics. Explore windows, curtains and blinds.

• The Finishing Touch

Learn how to prepare a lighting plan and instruct an electrician. Explore accessories and plants. Examine the decoration of the exterior of a property. Discover how to accurately estimate the cost of a scheme and how to see it from start to finish.

Outline

You’ll complete nine assessments during your course and three projects on completion of your course. You’ll also be required to produce a work folder. Your assessments can be submitted to ICS online via the Student Community, or they can be posted to ICS. It is recommended that you submit your assessments online as you will receive your results more quickly this way. Please note that, due to their nature, some of your assessments may need to be posted.

Assessment Breakdown

• Assessment 1: 5 activities requiring you to create scale drawings
• Assessment 2: 4 short answer questions and 1 activity requiring you to measure the dimensions of all the rooms in your house and note these on a sketch or plan of the rooms
• Assessment 3: 5 short answer questions and 1 activity requiring you to come up with a design for a room in a period style and represent this design on a scale floor plan
• Assessment 4: 3 short answer questions and 7 design activities
• Assessment 5: 3 short answer questions and 3 activities relating to colour
• Assessment 6: 3 short answer questions and 2 activities
• Assessment 7: 4 short answer questions and 2 activities
• Assessment 8: 3 short answer questions and 3 activities
• Assessment 9: 4 short answer questions and 2 activities

Projects

Project 1: create a room plan for loft space in a family house

Project 2: create a room plan for a home based office

Project 3: create a room plan for a room (of your choice) in a domestic environment

Work Folder: a collection of items from throughout the course that indicate your abilities

Notes

Short answer questions normally require you to write between a sentence and a paragraph. However, some short answer questions have multiple parts (i.e. Question 1 a, b, c, etc.) and so require lengthier answers.
